- Michael A. Markowski
Mike Markowski credits Low & Slow for helping him "redirect" his
life from his already sharp aeronautical engineering to
aeronautics publisher.
(Mike has always been considered by Self-Soar Association as the
eastern-USA Otto wing of Otto memberships.
EAA Hall of Fame: He will be
inducted on November 9, 2007, at Oshkosh.
Mike has some 8 books to his own authorship and a total of 35 titles
published on: hang gliding, ultralights, homebuilts, model airplanes,
aircraft mechanics, and aviation history.

recharge the batteries. But others are already dreaming backwards to
Larry
Mauro's solar cells or Dr. MacCready's solar aircraft. I am looking
forward to when the entire surfaces of every exposed surface (top, bottom,
side) of wing, pilot's clothing and wraps, cables, etc. are converting direct
sunlight and all indirect light into electricity for driving and storing. And
what about converting turbulence, vibrations, excessive lift into stored
energy. Quiet electric flight? Just launch? Emergency need? Soar
with motor off. What about powering a
self-launch by beam from ground to a receiver; leave the batteries or
power-source on the ground; beam me up; see

- FAI (3/4 March, 2007) states an award that tramples on the
merits of George Spratt, Gottlob Espenlaub, Charles Richard, Francis
Rogallo, Barry Palmer, Mike Burns and others as they ill-advisedly state an
error about someone inventing in mid-1963 "the" modern hang glider, which
has not been defined or found; and if what the guy made is "the", then that
has already been invented and so he could not have been the inventor; and thus
the FAI stepped into an error of judgment. A deep disrespect for Palmer and
Rogallo and the full Paresev and NASA inventions are involved in the
faux pas. Being socially in the right place to meet with the skills
and harness inventions and flying prowess of Bill Moyes is a credit, but
certainly the WING and all other mechanical parts of the Mark III, IV were
process invented by others solidly; and the very ornamental design of the WING
was Paresev 1B's standing...and it flew in hanging-pilot mode with
mass-shifting. So, the wording of the award was a faux pas of grand
proportions. Why could not the writers and FAI have just given an award
for the guy who was part of the cause of the Bill Moyes and Bill Bennett
events; those two Bills had other forces in them related to Rogallo wings
besides the JD connection; that social play is important and important for
hang gliding; but that social bridge does not win raw process invention and
should not detract from the ornamental design also in the appearance of the
Paresev 1B hang glider.

- Hang gliding continues to develop along many strands: sport,
experimental advanced hang glider designs, vintage hang glider construction,
continued experiments with foot-launched non-Rogallo sailplanes, motored hang
gliding, modified paragliders, new manufacturing methods, special purpose hang
gliders, practical applications, social recreation, platform for photography,
etc. There is a tease from nanotechnology. Weather watching is
continuing to go high tech. Visualization of one's flight for Internet
broadcasting continues to evolve. There is a grass roots move to explore
replicas, slower gliders, specialty constructions, and rotating-wing hang
gliders. Videos are exploding on the Internet; accidents are being shown in
their full. Several hundred discussion groups focused on hang gliding exist.
Commerce continues to grow and compete for customers.

- It was settled by consensus that the name "Standard Rogallo" remains the
name for a class of hang gliders that occurred from 1960-1975. There is no
need to bring in the seventy or so other people that played a part in bringing
forward the glider. The leadership of Francis M. Rogallo in so many ways gives
a strong cause for the consensus.

- One-Up (tm) :: Have tubes and chambers of the airframe of a hang
glider be filled with
compressed air. Use the compressed air to drive a propeller for
launching to thermal-chasing altitude. Propeller folds to streamlined
position when not in use. Refill pressured air via solar energy from
specialized sail during the flight and during landing stops. Continue
the fliking journey across continents and oceans. No other fuel. Pilot
power could augment the solar power to compress the air. Macro
appearance of the hang glider need not be much off from the Paresev 1B
hang glider's wing, but higher aspect ratio Rogallo wings or double-
surfaced Rogallos could be in the game. The hidden function and double
utility of the tubes of the airframe may not be apparent upon just
looking at the macro ornamental appearance of the hang glider. Just
sun, air, and smart construction! Combine this with the One-UP
streamlined pilot presented two days ago and presto...travel the world.
Tweak the situation to have retractable floats and perfect launching
off water surfaces and have the go-anywhere hang glider.
- Ulti-Up (tm) of Nov. 1, 2007 :: The Ulti-Up One-Up has airframe
which is with airbeams that are super-pressurizable yet of thin-flexible wall
for low tote volume when not in use. One leaves enough pressure to keep the
integrity of the airframe; excess pressure is used for special launching of
flight-saving flight sectors. For reliability and stability of sizing,
advanced nano-engineered film will be used. Ulti-Up floats on water. Inside
double-surface is shelter from elements while at sea on water at night. Sun
will be used to obtain potable water. Sun will be used for some hydrogen
generation for some sub-system uses. Food: Nano-smartly-made food
nano-manufactured from molecules in ambient and recycled environment. Some
inventions are yet needed to complete the full self-soar system. The sun's
rays will not appreciably damage the integrity of the flight system.
