In 1908 a gliding club used the full
mechanics of a cable-stayed triangle control frame (TCF) with
tether-hung pilot behind the control bar. Territory of Breslau.
The mechanism is still used much today.
Tony Prentice, age 13, in 1960, hybrid hang glider built of bamboo and
with hybrid tethered hang system.
The
Rogallo leadership with parawings, paragliders (then understood as boned
flexible wing gliders), Paresev hung-mass gliders, gliding parachutes
1945-onward had impact. Part of the press of the "Rogallo Revolution" had
clips of water-ski kiting use of the NASA seeded constructions of ski
kite-glider in the 60s; one project started in 1962 by Mike Burns (SkiPlane or
Ski Plane- self announced as :kite-glider) in Australia deposited public show
in April of 1963; he would later help another fellow Australian sharpen the
airworthiness of a kite that morphed to a boned flexible-wing kite-glider at
the hands of a gyro kitist John Dickenson (in his gyro- control (Bensen-based), he understood the degenerate-TCF stick and weight-shift control (such
mechanics were solved and used by at least 1908 for foot-launch hang gliding,
even in the cable-stayed TCF with pilot hung behind; such 1908 control was
used in pre 1950s in several hang gliders and again used in the 1960s and
forward hang gliders)). See example of
degenerate-TCF in
Bensen gyro.
David Barish and his foot-launching wide sled kite with freely-falling
pilot mass as kite-system mooring had its impact in preparing some for
celebrating the Otto Lilienthal Meet of 1971.
1961. Celebrity Jim Hobson (of Lawrence Welk Show fame) began
experimenting with the Rogallo wing in model form, leading to the construction
of a full size glider which he flew it at Dockweiler Beach on January 2, 1962.
The glider frame was fabricated from aluminum and aircraft bolts supported by
aircraft cable attached to hardware store eye bolts and turnbuckles.[93] A
second larger hang glider was taken to Dockweiler Beach; it featured a 4 mil
polyester film reinforced with fiberglass tape. Movies of August, 1962 flights
were made.
Dockweiler in mid-60s saw Palmer-influenced Richard Miller (certainly as
Soaring editor had also his SSA community) bamboo stayed his control frame
choosing the parallel bar format over the 1908 tethering behind TCF; the
flight was only from about 18 ft. altitude at the beach.
Jack Lambie and his Hang Loose biplane tailed hang glider project with
students. Popular press covered his exploits.
