FAQ

What about safety in kite power exploration and application?

"Safety is the first mission in flying"  NASA

Amateur or professional kiteologists can remain doing what they do when safety is paramount. Injury to self and others can bring injury, death, and damage lawsuits that can ruin the adventure.  Products and systems sold to the public will be certified by kite engineers and other agents. National airspace governance aims to keep all sorts of air-using things from colliding with each other. Also, the public does not want things falling from the sky out of control on their properties or persons. Anyone experimenting with kite systems is encouraged to respect airspace rules while testing and proving the safety of each operation. Those sharing experiments in reports to Editor@UpperWindpower.com  are encouraged to well describe the steps taken to assure safe operation.

  • Kite tethers can act as large razor blades that can cut off fingers, limbs, and heads.

  • Out-of-control kites can end up placing parts where they will play havoc with traffic, industrial processes, public energy grid transmission lines, wildlife, and airplanes. Use of de-powering lines, kill lines, secondary tethers, radio-control gliding, line-chutes, locators, lights, markers, visibility system, ...

  • What is the downwind environment?

  • Weather watching and planning is part of every kite-fly session.

  • People approaching an operating kite system need to be appropriately warned of hazards.

  • Things break. Engineer and operate kite systems so that upon part or system failure, there will be a safe means to retrieve the broken parts and system.
