This second generation KiteLab "Super"HotWing flew well "right off the bat" & was marveled at by hundreds of spectators at WSIKF 2009. Its soft ultra low mass means it is safe around people & it flew without problems.

25Aug2009 Lang's Challenge :: AWE running with little human attention for 700 hours.  LC is a target yet to be reached.   Send in what you know  towards this target: Notes@EnergyKiteSystems.net
  • The LC might be easier to achieve than one might first think. Consider a Tipping Boom system with short tether in a nearly no-wind site; the wind picks up a bit and the kite drives the generator. Let 700 hours pass and presto, the AWE system could be said to have been running.    What say you?  JoeF

  • Yeah, the "Lang Prize" (a nice beer?) can be easy using structure or terrain. I've done membrane wing mills for days at a time & took them down still working.

    You've hit on a good variant, a kite on a pole (winged wafting lever) held up in calm, in a storm it simply bends over like a palm tree. much less structure & tall mass.

    The latest "tethister" tri-tether works well with trees. You simly anchor a line off from the top of the tree a & tap the center of it to a spragged generator. A tree is a dissipative aero/mass dampener array, not very efficient for extracting power, so only small devices are really practical      DaveS

26Aug2009 Single-family tasks done via kite energy: (Call for descriptions: Notes@energykitesystems.net)
  • Cook food by kite-canopy solar; electric; friction;
  • Dry clothes by kiting.....several ways: hang and fly, electric, solar heat,
  • Travel via kite-gained energy directly or  indirectly.
  • Work in cooler air aloft rather than in the very hot below.  Office in the sky...
  •
27Aug2009 Recall the complex: Dual kite system with no hard tether to ground; one is drogue generating electricity converted to laser; one is in jet stream generating electricity converted to laser; lasers send energy to earth receiver spots with smart tracking; military advances in lasers bring this more into my attention. Operations are smartly robot controlled. Ground station could be roof top of huge second-purpose food-production facility, etc.     .... • stable single line kite (SSLK) AWE.      In AWE, the use of stable single line kite (SSLK) forms a family of explorations.  One branch of  SSLK AWE uses the reel-in and reel-out method. Another branch of SSLK AWE uses controls on the SSLK that drives a cart-generator windward or a railed cart generator from wind window side to side. Controls may be RC or robotic reaction servos.  Another use in SSLK AWE is where the SSLK is the lifter kite for wingmills, kitemotors.   Another is the use of the SSLK in established highly turbulent sites where the air's turbulence is mined for actions toward generating electricity or pumping.   . Another branch of SSLK AWE regards moving goods and people in transport rather than using other fuels.  Log lifting with a SSLK is in this branch.  Also, attempts to use SSLK to tap atmospheric potential difference (Ben Franklin) is in history.   Etc. Many branches.    Notes are welcome:  Notes@EnergyKiteSystems.net

27Aug2009 Notice about kite-control systems in a reverse-use operation: Aloft control kite with resultant driving of what were formerly thought of as control lines; the drive lines drive ground-based generator.  With this research strategy, take another look at any and all kite-control arrangements; keep the arrangement, but initially control the aloft kite by RC or smart robotics and then use the formerly-understood kite control system to drive the ground-based pump or electric generator.   For example, look at the Wright Brothers quad-line control system in their patent; add smart aloft wing-warping to that system and feel the changes in the ground points and let those changes grind pump or electric generator.      JoeF

DaveS notes with significant heads' up: "A problem with the "reversed" control vs. power is that efficient control is primarily information, not power, so control channels are weak compared to power channels. So a telephone or radio link, say, is a very poor power line.

If a quad kite were to run power via variable line forces it would be weak & complex compared to raw traction force."

30Aug2009 In a news item: "Wind is an elder statesman of renewable energies. Though still small in the grand scheme of power production, its technology is mature and proven, and its costs are competitive."

Comment: That writer has not factored in AWE.  AWE is not mature; AWE is gestating. AWE will be born and will operate at many levels with many methods from tiny to huge. Much AWE will be independent of major grids; yet there will be AWE feeding national and even international super grids. AWE Intermittency will be handled well; indeed, there will be some AWE installations that will be 100% non-intermittent; this will be news to wind energy analysts.   JoeF
