I love that video, taken of an obviously old, high-end
paraglider in gusty conditions, with a pilot that didn't control his canopy
surge. Of course it's gonna end in disaster, just as a HG launch would if it
had a pilot with poor launch skills flying a glider that was beyond his/her
skill level in gusty conditions. Rootbeer Wyatt
Hi Rootbeer,
It's easy to try to impress your peers with your know-it-all logic but it
falls flat in the face of the death of a highly experienced paragliding
instructor launching into a small thermal. This isn't an isolated incident.
This example is just one of hundreds of paragliding takeoffs that have
resulted in fatalities over the past decade. If it mattered, I could tell you
that this was a nice day to fly a hang glider and that I have launched various
models of hang gliders dozens of times from that exact spot. I have even
encountered similar small thermals on takeoff that have required added roll,
pitch and yaw correction which was instinctive, easy and not particularly
memorable. My main concern was that, if a wingtip touched the ground, a
ground-loop could result in a bent down-tube. Not the death of the pilot for
God's sake! But how hang gliders behave is entirely irrelevant to paragliding.
You paraglider pilots do not understand this. You seem to think that there is
some comparison to be made between paragliders and hang gliders. You are
wrong. If you attempt to launch a paraglider from a mountain, hang gliders
don't have anything to do with it. And you do not understand this fact:
paragliders often collapse at takeoff and kill their pilots. Unless all you
paraglider pilots are unbelievably stupid, this problem would have been fixed
through training long ago. But it hasn't been fixed at all! So now the best
you can do is blame the pilot. We hang glider pilots have been watching you
paraglider pilots blame your fellow pilots over and over - for decades! Don't
you get it? There is something wrong with your wings! They kill you! You
really need to give this some serious thought. Get an airframe. It's the only
thing that makes sense. Join the living.
