The document is in public domain. The fundamental hang
glider mechanics involved were also already in public domain in 1962 along
with the single-point hang, pendulum weight-shift control, A-frame for
control of payload positioning, and for any sort of payload or size of
hang glider or for powered the hang glider, inhabited or not. The
mechanics of the simple standard hang glider were exhibited in Breslau in
1908 with the A-frame cable-stayed with hung pilot grasping the control
frame for foot-launch hang gliding; such most-simple control system is
even used today in hang gliders and powered hang gliders. We thank those
who contributed to the public domain over the centuries. In 1960-61
John Worth designed, built, and flew many versions of the triangle
control framed four-boom Rogallo-influenced hang gliders and even powered
them. Ryan Aeronautical had scores of people advances the study of
the hang glider unpowered and powered. In 1962 Barry Hill Palmer, Thomas
H. Purcell, Jr., and James Hobson would show citizen projects of hang
gliders using such public domain art.
Over a year later late in 1963 an partially unaware
tinkerer would attempt without success to patent the public domain
mechanics while he adapted the Ryan research aircraft Rogallo-affected
wing while ending up essentially mechanically duplicating the 1908 Breslau
control system; then about 50 years later a friend of his passionately
pushed untenable claims into hang gliding orgs' merit systems;
all self-respecting hang glider participants are called to have the
global-intended "Inventor" aspects and some other untenable "invention"
claims erased from the core of the hang gliding sport and rather support
deep gratitude for the body of public domain arts formatted by a century
and more of workers on the flexible-wing hang gliders; as one might care,
appeal to the F.A.I. for altering the text on the matter.
The hang gliders may be powered when wanted; and the
same vehicles may be long-lined towed as wished; such is ancient kiting
arts which are obvious and thus non-inventive once such arts
were deposited
into the public domain.
