(EN) ROTATING MOTION POWER GENERATION BY HARNESSING HIGH ALTITUDE WIND
(FR) GÉNÉRATION D'ÉNERGIE PAR MOUVEMENT ROTATIF PAR EXPLOITATION DU VENT À HAUTE ALTITUDE
Abstract:front page image
(EN)A system for generating power by harnessing high altitude wind consists of a flying frame, a generator mounted on the ground and a group of ropes (A, B, C, D) connecting frame and generator. The flying frame looks like a kite containing a closed triangle surface at the top followed by an open rectangular frame in which a smaller rectangular closed surface is positioned in such a way, that it can slide within the frame from left to right and vice versa. The sliding surface is pushed up by wind, lifting the side of frame upwards, which momentarily carries the sliding surface, causing in the next phase the sliding surface to slide down to the other side within the frame by gravity. In turn, the side of the frame, which is now carrying the sliding surface, is lifted and the other side is lowered. In that state the sliding surface is again sliding from the upper to the lower position within the frame. This alternating movement of the frame is transferred to the generator by ropes C and D. Ropes A and B stabilize the frame. A ballon constantly keeps the frame up in the air.

Discuss:
Start:
1. Where is the "high" in this concept?
2. The "balloon" lifter could indeed by a kite balloon or kytoon.
3. We invited Khaled Katmawi Sabbagh to join forum and introduce his ideas.
4. It is groundgen using the lever or boom method. Sliding devices aloft provide alternation of two working ropes. The two working ropes seem to drive via sprags or similar to keep a driven shaft rotating; that rotation could then drive a pump or electric generator or other practical works.
5. Catenary slack and tether stretch will be sources of energy damping and delay, especially as altitude increases for the wing. He does not seem to address this challenge.
6. To uncover novelty, compare and contrast all earlier AWES patents.
7.

Khaled Katmawi Sabbagh of Aleppo, Syria

Dear Sir/Madam
My name is Khaled Katmawi Sabbagh of Aleppo, Syria
I was able to invent a practical and relatively low cost  method to generate a rotational motion power which in turn can generate electrical power by harnessing high altitude wind (which is more continuous and much more stronger than the near-ground wind) so this invention may be as a revolution in power generation and as a serious step towards reducing the dependence on the fossil fuel.
I have applied for an international patent (according to PCT) and I am pending. I am seeking possible cooperation with your esteemed institute (or any company) to develop and invest in this invention, therefore I am enclosing herewith a detailed explanation  of this invention. I have performed a practical experiment by  a small scale prototype to simulate this idea. The test result was very much encouraging and you can watch a video recording of this experiment (which consists of two parts, part 1 shows the prototype itself and part 2  shows the prototype running)  at the following links :

Awaiting your comments.

Multi-Mission Frameless Airship Platform (MFAP) leverages composite material science to achieve a frameless lightweight airframe design enabling increased speed, lift and cargo capacity. Deployable/retrievable high-value modules provide enhanced operational and mission flexibility. Unified power electronics enable hybrid integration of propulsion, power generation (e.g. diesel generator, photovoltaic solar, etc.), energy storage and tethered wind-power generation for both on-grid and off-grid electrical power delivery for airborne operations and ground operations. Onboard antenna systems serve as cell phone towers.

Subject: Re: (WO2012005703) ROTATING MOTION POWER GENERATION BY ...
Thank you very much for your comments. Please note that my English language is not very good, so perhaps I use unsuitable words or expressions. In fact, my invention is a concept yet, and determining the options which makes this technique gives the best possible gain (such as, the best possible altitude, the best materials which the kite and the ropes could be made from and which must be durable and light such as carbon fibers, the best design of the kite's structure,…etc) needs to specialists in several fields and to a full scale prototype. Regarding the probable problem of the catenary slack, I have already thought about it, if that happened on a large scale, the solution is simple, we can locate the 'device of converting the alternative motion to a rotating motion' approximately under the kite so that the ropes (C&D) which transfer the motion, fall down perpendicularly approximately and of course in this case we must use the second design of the 'device of converting the alternative motion to a rotating motion' which its drawing and explanation are included in the copy of my patent application, thus no catenary will happened. I think it's useful that there is some stretch in the ropes (C&D), I don't think it's a problem. I would like to add, the alternative motion of the two sides of the kite upward and downward is not the only movement, the kite also will moves horizontally to left and right as a responding to the horizontal component of the force applied on the sliding surface, and that gives more gain.
With best regards
Khaled K. Sabbagh

The utility model discloses a luminous kite, which comprises a kite body. The kite body consists of a skeleton and a kite surface covered on the skeleton, wherein a luminous element is arranged on the skeleton. The luminous kite is characterized by also comprising a generator and a fan; the generator is connected with the skeleton through a fixing bracket; an input shaft of the generator is connected with the fan through a transmission mechanism; and a power supply output end of the generator is connected with the luminous element through a circuit. The fan is blown by wind power to rotate, the generator is driven by the transmission mechanism to work and generate current, and then the luminous element works so that the kite does not need to replace a battery, solves the problem that the luminous kite in the prior art is inconvenient to replace the battery and saves the cost.

The tethered wind turbine uses an aerodynamic, flow-concentrating shape and lighter-than-air construction utilizing a lifting gas and an electrically conductive tether fixed to ground to reap energy from the wind at low or high altitude. The design has no need for the large, expensive, bulky and unsightly tower structures, pivoting nacelles, or gearboxes presently used in conventional horizontal axis windmills. The tethered wind turbine of this invention easily and passively floats aloft downwind to a direction and position that is aligned with the wind. The invention uses sensors and control modules to fly gracefully at an optimal altitude in most wind regimes and also to ascend/descend when appropriate to seek shelter from extreme weather conditions. Ideally, the tethered wind turbine of this invention would utilize carbon nanotube materials in its tether for both structural and conductive purposes. The ring-wing section profile in the preferred embodiment of this invention optimally would have a very low coefficient of drag. A major benefit of this invention is potentially much lower cost per installed kilowatt capacity and a lower operating cost per kilowatt hour delivered to the end user.

Subject: Re: Frank Barnett, filed 15 May 1877
This inventor does not employ a tether, yet uses the term "kite" to describe sailed wings on the flying machine.

Group: kitepatents Message: 747 From: Joe Faust Date: 2/11/2012
Subject: Re: Apparatus employed in flight through the air

This is a flip wing  focus. The inventor envisions lift acting away from the earth or toward the earth, depending on choices.  He did not mention uses of horizontal veering or oblique veering.   He does envision powering the flip wing.
Group: kitepatents Message: 748 From: Joe Faust Date: 2/11/2012
Subject: Re: Apparatus employed in flight through the air
Ames envisioned a single rotatable "sustaining surface"
and also of putting the rotation to work for tertiary purpose.

Ames illustrated a simple cardboard rectangle in free flight rotating with the flip wing principle to get a net glide:

Group: kitepatents Message: 750 From: Joe Faust Date: 2/12/2012
Subject: Re: Aerial Apparatus
This seems to be the core precursor to contemporary  excursions of using a kite, a mid-line pilot, and a hydrofoil. For example, see the adventures of Luc Armant and others.   See:   http://www.augredelair.fr/joomla/recits/luc_armant/ailedeau.pdf   and
http://proafile.com/archive/article/207   and:

  • Luc Armant
Self-Flying Hapa (Aile d'Eau -video).      See core document.
    He is strongly accenting OZONE.

  • Stéphane Rousson
Human Hapa ( used modified Chien de Mer in SeagliderChien de Mer was created by Didier Costes).     First flight Seaglider.

What he does with a kite and a hydrofoil may be a first, but it can greatly be improved in many ways.

And, of course, this is a core model for fully-aired Free-flight AWES where the hydrofoil is simply taken as a lower airfoil operating in differential wind environment to permit free-flight kiting.  Woglom (recording instances in book Parakites in late 1880s), Richard Miller, Joe Faust, Dave Santos, Wayne German, Dale C. Kramer, and others have in various ways advanced the Free-Flight system that has tether(s) joining an upper wing set and a lower wing set.  See the growing club:  http://energykitesystems.net/0/FFAWE/index.html       Long distance soaring, Wayne German tacking to any point on Earth for goods and people transport with "air-sailing" and advanced energy production in such FF-AWES are some of the coming adventures using Thayer's fundamental principles.

Three-part system: upper wing set, tether set, lower-wing set operating in fluid(s). All parts could be underwater; all parts could be in the air; or parts may share air and water. The total gross system is a kite system: wing set, tether set, and resistive set (which is a wing set, sometimes as primitive as a soil anchor).
