| May 18, 2020, post by Dave Santos Overlapping String-Net and Strand Physics: Relation to KiteMatter [editorial note: quick intro of import to Kite Energy of String-Net and Strand thinking, as context for references] Xiao-Gang Wen's and Christoph Schiller's respective String-Net and Strand physics unification models are at heart compatible and synergistic, two perspectives on same accumulating science. Many of the equations and experiments are shared standards. Obvious identities exist between diagrams of Xiao-Gang's Nets and Schiller's Tangles, and indeed with Crystal, Knot, Braid, and Feynman Diagrams. String-like objects and their dynamics are the essence of these models. String-Net and Strand theory alike cover extended emergent macroscopic quasi-particles, like macroscopic phonons, and are not to be confused with prior String Theories applying the string metaphor to a far tinier realm of fundamental physics inaccessible to observation and experiment. Rich correspondences between new string-like Topological Order physics and kite metamaterial engineering are pretty much one-to-one. The cross-fertilization flows both ways; the new physics offers ready mathematical formalisms to kite engineering. And power kites offer tangible experimental analogues to support emergent theory. A fantastic convergence of science and engineering is developing fast as the engineering field of Quantum Metamaterials. There is no technological case more momentous than the possibility of mega-scale energy-kite lattices delivering GW scale wind energy to supplant fossil fuels. There is much work to do, but the goal is in sight. Physicists will consider kite analog physics ("KiteMatter") and find inspiration, just as walking drops invigorated pilot wave discussion. Kite technologists will in turn demonstrate and refine applicability of rapidly advancing physics.+ |
