Aug. 29, 2020, post by Dave Santos Grid-Fins and Lattice-Wing Cases Grid-Fins are related to other Lattice-Wing cases like Vented-Wings Cellular-Kites and Brid-Flock Formations. Grid-Fins and other Lattice-Wings are a general design option when single wings are disadvantaged by specific scaling law factors; when unit-area, unit-actuation-force, and/or unit-square-cube-mass must be limited. The trade-offs are generally decreased L/D, increased unit-count/part-count/build-complexity, and less total stall-drag (when such drag is wanted). Grid-Fins share general Lattice-Wing analytic properties of recursive self-similar, fractal dimensions. As a rigid-wing class, they do not scale greatly as kites, but present a close similarity-class to specific AWES designs like Joby and X-wind have explored, and somewhat inform aspects of megascale soft-lattices. |
